Michael Zetterer has now been on the books at Werder Bremen for almost ten years. The goalkeeper has experienced a lot with the club since his move from SpVgg Unterhaching in 2015, and his stay on the Weser is set to continue for the foreseeable future, after an extension to the 28-year-old’s contract was announced ahead of last weekend’s clash with Borussia Mönchengladbach. Speaking to the press on Tuesday, Zetterer revealed that it was clear his future lay at Werder, and that he is looking forward to the seasons to come.

“In the end, there were several things that tipped the balance,” said the Bavarian, explaining his decision to continue with the club. In addition to becoming a regular starter this season, opportunities to develop as a player played a key role. Zetterer is determined to continue to improve: “I’m extremely ambitious, just as I have been over the last few years to get to this point,” explains the goalkeeper. “There are areas where I can still improve – I think there’s still a lot more in me,” he added.

New experiences for Zetterer

Zetterer’s journey to fulfilling that potential will continue to take place on the Weser. The ‘keeper will head into next season as SVW’s first-choice stopper for the first time. “It’s another new experience. You have a different standing in the team and more responsibility,” says Zetterer, adding: “I’m really looking forward to it.” He is also looking forward to the return of fellow goalkeeper Mio Backhaus, who has spent this season on loan at Dutch side FC Volendam. Zetterer, who had a spell of his own in the Netherlands with PEC Zwolle a few years ago, heaped praise on the youngster and is eager to work alongside him. “He has good potential and has gained more experience over the past year. I think it’s cool to have someone waiting in the wings who you can show a thing or two.”

But before that, Zetterer’s focus remains on the current season, and his side’s final two fixtures against Leipzig and Bochum. The goalkeeper’s mindset is clear ahead of the games: “We’ll approach the last two matches like finals and then we’ll see where we are in the table after Bochum."
